Joseph Kupelwieser

Joseph Kupelwieser (born January 14, 1791 in Vienna ; † February 2, 1866 in Rudolfsheim , today Vienna) was an Austrian theater poet .

Life

At first Joseph grew up as the son of the iron goods manufacturer Johann Kupelwieser in the Lower Austrian market of Piesting , Guntramsdorf and Wiener Neustadt , but also attended the Academic Gymnasium and the educational institute of Giannatassio del Rio in Vienna in 1801/1802 . He then briefly studied at the Oriental Academy , but then became a soldier and unsuccessful ironware manufacturer. With his wife Anna Nödl (wedding on May 17, 1812) he had at least five children. He was one of the most active members of the nonsense Society (1817-1818), his dortiger nickname was Blasius leaks in the Ludlamshöhle he had the pseudonym Domwiesel the Eilt judge .

From 1821 onwards, Kupelwieser worked for two years as a “ secretary ” at the Kärntnertortheater , where he began his activities as a translator , theater poet and librettist . His love affair with the actress Emilie Neumann - the first actress to play Rosamunde von Helmina von Chézy in the Theater an der Wien - led to his leaving his wife and family and engagements in Graz , Pressburg (where he was also the theater director in 1825), Budapest and Agram (1829 also briefly theater director) aspired to. From 1836 to 1862 he worked again as a secretary at the theater in der Josefstadt .

Together with his younger brother Leopold Kupelwieser he belonged to the circle of friends around Franz Schubert . In 1823 he wrote the libretto for Schubert's opera Fierrabras , which was approved by the censors. The opera was not performed during the lifetime of the two authors. From 1824 Joseph Kupelwieser was also successful as a theater poet; several of his pieces were performed in Vienna and Graz.
