Josef Latour von Thurmburg (short: Josef Latour ) (born February 2, 1820 in Vienna ; † December 28, 1903 ibid) was a general in Austria-Hungary .

Life

After studying law , Latour worked as a concept officer in Graz and Vienna . After joining the 10th Jäger Battalion , he served during the Italian campaigns in 1848 and 1849. He then completed his military career up to captain . In 1859 he was transferred to the central chancellery of Emperor Franz Joseph . With his promotion to major , Latour became a wing adjutant . It accompanied the emperor on his travels and was used as a messenger to the empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (Sisi) who was staying abroad . This developed a close and personal relationship with the Empress.

From 1864 he was Adlatus of Count Leopold Gondrecourt , the educator of Archduke Rudolf of Austria-Hungary . Latour was thus responsible for the education of the Crown Prince. In contrast to Gondrecourt, Latour thought nothing of military training methods. He therefore informed the Empress of the bad treatment of her son. In 1865 Gondrecourt was dismissed after an ultimatum from the Empress. She handed the education to Josef Latour, who, in contrast to his predecessor, was more liberal. Officially, however, he only became Rudolf's tutor when he was appointed major general in 1870 , although he had filled the post since 1865. Shortly before his retirement in 1877, he was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal in 1876 . During his retirement he was a member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council .
