Josef Murr (born June 6, 1864 in Brixen , † January 4, 1932 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian teacher and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Murr ".

Life

Murr was the son of the district school inspector Vinzenz Murr and attended school in Brixen, Rotholz, Hall and Innsbruck. In his school days he began to deal intensively with botany . At the age of 23 he obtained his teaching certificate at the Innsbruck University of Applied Sciences and became a teacher in Latin and Greek , later with the title of Professor of Classical Philology. In 1893 he married Antonia Neuner; the marriage remained childless. His positions as a teacher were Innsbruck, Hall, Marburg an der Drau , Linz , Trient and Feldkirch . Murr published, beginning in 1881, for more than 50 years a great number of botanical works. His botanical interest was particularly in the genera Hieracium and Chenopodium , but also generally in the flora of the areas in which he was active; so he also wrote a multi-part “New overview of the fern and flowering plants of Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein” (1923–1926) as an old work. Several plant species have been named after him by other botanists.
