Josef Ospelt

Josef Ospelt (born January 9, 1881 in Vaduz ; † June 1, 1962 there ) was the first head of government of the Principality of Liechtenstein from March 2, 1921 to April 27, 1922 .

biography

Josef Ospelt was born as the son of Julius and Maria (née Seger). He attended the elementary and state school in Vaduz and, after finishing the latter, entered the civil service as government chancellor under state administrator Karl von In Der Mauer. In 1911 he was appointed government secretary. In 1916 he married Mathilde Ospelt from Vaduz. Ospelt was one of the founders of the Progressive Citizens' Party in 1918 and was later chairman and administrator of the Liechtensteiner Volksblatt newspaper for many years . On March 23, 1921 he was appointed by the prince to succeed the provincial administrator Josef Peer and at the same time to the prince's council. After the new constitution came into force on October 5, 1921, and he was involved in drafting it, he was appointed head of government at the suggestion of the state parliament. During this transition period he was Liechtenstein's last governor and first head of government.

After his resignation as head of government on April 27, 1922, he moved to Vienna with his family for a short time due to changed political circumstances. From 1918 to 1922 he was also responsible for the princely domain administration as rentmaster . After 1922 he founded a legal and insurance agency in Vaduz, which was continued after his death by his son Willy Ospelt and which still exists today. From 1925 he was the representative of Zurich Insurance . After the renewed political upheaval in 1928, Ospelt held several important public offices. In addition, he was one of the founding members of the Historical Society in Liechtenstein, which he headed from 1928 to 1955 as chairman, and for many years on the board of the Vaduz winegrowers' cooperative. From 1930 to 1932 he was a member of the Liechtenstein state parliament. From 1952 on, he was in charge of the management of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings in Liechtenstein.
