Walter Kieber

Walter Kieber (born February 20, 1931 in Feldkirch ; † June 21, 2014 in Vaduz ) was a Liechtenstein lawyer and politician . From 1974 to 1978 he was Head of Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein. He was a member of the Progressive Citizens' Party .

biography

Walter Kieber was born in 1931 as the son of the federal railway official Alfons Kieber and his wife Elisabeth (née Prantauer). He grew up in Bregenz , where he attended elementary school from 1937 to 1941 and grammar school from 1941 to 1950. Then studied law at the University of Innsbruck and received his doctorate there in 1954 to Dr. iur. From 1955 to 1959 he was with the law firm of Ludwig Marxer , the law firm Ludwig Marxer operates in Vaduz. From 1959 to 1965 he was legal advisor and head of the legal service of the Liechtenstein government . Afterwards he was head of the presidential office of the Liechtenstein government from 1965 to 1970.

From 1970 to 1974 Kieber acted as deputy head of government. He then held the post of head of government from 1974 to 1978. After the Progressive Citizens' Party lost its majority in the state parliament in 1978, at the request of Prince Franz Josef II , Kieber was again deputy head of government in order to support the government in important projects that were still to come. After signing the currency agreement with Switzerland and completing the reform of company law, Kieber resigned as deputy head of government in 1980. From 1981 to 1999 he was a partner in the law firm Marxer & Partner . In 1993 he was a co-founder of Centrum Bank AG in Vaduz and was a member of its board of directors from 1993 to 2001. From 1993 to 1998 he was President of the Liechtenstein Bar Association . In 2001 he and his son Daniel Kieber founded the law firm Kieber & Nuener - Lawyers in Vaduz, for which he worked for the next few years.

Kieber was a citizen of Schellenberg and married to Selma Ritter, who came from Schaan. The marriage had two children. In 1978 he was awarded the title «Princely Judicial Councilor». In 2006 his autobiography Years of Awakening was published . In addition, he published various legal publications.
