Schwaiger grew up in Flachgau and attended the Berndorf elementary school from 1971 to 1975. After Schwaiger had carried out various holiday activities between 1980 and 1993, in particular as a construction site assistant and agricultural skilled worker, he joined the Salzburg state government in 1993, where he was employed as a construction site clerk for alpine farming and official agricultural expert from 1993 to 1995. From 1995 to 1998 he worked as a clerk in the agricultural policy department, then from 1998 to 2000 he was the office manager of Regional Councilor Josef Eisl . In 2001 he was promoted to head of the rural development department and in 2004 to head of the entire agriculture and forestry department. In 2009 he took over the management of the livelihood and energy department (water management, agriculture and energy). After the state elections in 2013 , Josef Schwaiger was elected to the state council on June 19, 2013. In this function he succeeded Regional Councilor Josef Eisl . Schwaiger was not politically active before he entered the state government.

Private

Schwaiger was born to Josef and Franziska Schwaiger and is married. He became the father of a daughter in 1993 and 2002. He describes his family as his hobbies as well as handicrafts, cycling, hiking and reading.
