Josef Turk (born September 12, 1895 in Verdun (Slovenia) , Novo mesto ; † May 3, 1951 in Moraga , Contra Costa County , California ) was a Yugoslav Roman Catholic prelate , theologian and historian.

life and work

Josip Turk, who lost his father in 1907 and his mother in 1923, grew up in Novo Mesto with ten siblings and studied canon law , philosophy and theology in Vienna , Innsbruck, Munich and Rome (doctorate in Rome). He was ordained a priest on September 3, 1922. From 1925 to 1931 he was prefect of the seminary in Ljubljana and taught at the theological faculty of the University of Ljubljana from 1926 , from 1932 as associate professor, from 1938 as full professor of church history (from 1940 to 1941 also as dean of the faculty and from 1941 to 1942 as Vice Dean). In 1943 he stayed in the Vatican and received the title of prelate. In 1945 he fled Yugoslavia and reached the United States ( San Francisco ) via Mehrerau Monastery (1946–1947) and Brig in 1948 , where his brother Francis (1879–1939) had been pastor from 1904 and his sister Anna Mary (1898–1975 ), who had followed her brother in 1913, was now married. There he was accommodated and taught at Saint Mary's College of California , but suffered a sudden death soon after. His estate is in Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo .

In 1937 Turk discovered the so-called Carta Caritatis prior , ie the oldest (and hitherto unknown) version of the Cistercian Carta Caritatis in the Slovenian National and University Library, and reported on it in the Cistercian Chronicle 54, 1947, pp. 2-12. He first published it in 1942 in a publication of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts , also in the very first issue of Analecta Cisterciensia and again in 1948 (on this by Columban Spahr in: Cistercienser-Chronik 58, 1951).
