Josef Wallnig (* 1946 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian conductor and emeritus professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum .

life and work

Wallnig studied piano and composition at the Mozarteum Academy for Music and Performing Arts, and later conducting with Hans Swarowsky at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna . He received distinction diplomas and perfected his knowledge with Franco Ferrara in Rome. After that he was Karl Böhm's assistant at the Salzburg Festival for many years , worked as a répétiteur at the Vienna State Opera and as Kapellmeister at opera houses in Germany and Salzburg.

In 1980 he was appointed full professor for opera interpretation at the University Mozarteum Salzburg (UMS), headed its opera department and was deputy rector for five years. His students include Anja Schlosser , Katerina Tretyakova and Matthias Winckhler . Wallnig founded the Mozart Opera Institute and continues to head it. The institute is anchored in the UMS, communicates historical performance practice and "counterpoints this with current perspectives and performance styles", according to the self-presentation on the institute's website. Wallnig conducted and gave master classes in Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the USA, Siberia, Korea, Japan and Egypt. He acted as a juror in a number of music competitions, for example at ARD Munich and at the Mozart singing competition in Japan. He is the artistic director of "Ensemble 17", which gives concerts in German-speaking countries and Italy.

At the Salzburg Festival 2006, Wallnig conducted Apollo et Hyacinthus and The Debt of the First Commandment , directed by John Dew . The production enjoyed the approval of the press and the public. It was recorded in image and sound and is included in the Mozart 22 CD collection .

Grodeck was released on LP in 1986 . A scenic poem by Georg Trakl , set to music by Herbert Grassl and conducted by Wallnig.
