Joseph (spelling: JOSEPH) is a fashion brand for women and men founded by Joseph Ettedgui in London in 1983 , which was bought by the Japanese textile giant KK Onward Kashiyama ( Chūō , Tokyo ) in 2005 and is still in existence today.

Companies

Neutral colors, simple models, cuts for women inspired by men's fashion, timeless classics and - especially in the 1990s - slim- cut women's trousers established the rapid rise of the Joseph brand.

As early as 1979 Joseph Ettedgui opened a boutique called Joseph designed by Norman Foster in London , in which, in addition to continental European designer fashion, he offered his own simple fashion designs under the name Joseph. In 1983 he officially founded Joseph Ltd. This was followed over the years by the labels Joseph Tricot (knitwear, from 1979), Joseph pour la maison (household goods, from 1984), Joseph Bis (fashionable second line, from 1985), Joseph pour la ville (business fashion , from 1986). Own Joseph boutiques - initially in London and Europe, later also worldwide - were opened. In 1991 sales were £ 22 million. In 1993 the jeans label Joseph Denim was presented and for the first time a complete men's line, Joseph Homme , was offered, although Joseph's men's fashion had already been available before. For this purpose, a separate shop was opened on South Molton Street in London. The men's fashion customers included celebrities such as Mick Jagger , Paul McCartney , Elton John and David Bowie . The 1990s were the heyday of the Joseph brand.

In 1997, all of the Joseph shops, which were minimalist in the 1980s with black marble and chrome and in the 1990s with bare concrete and white furniture, were given a friendlier design. Timeless basic parts were now offered under the Joseph Essentials label . The turnover of the Joseph Group was now at 30 million pounds, the workforce consisted of 200 employees. In the same year, a Joseph boutique opened on Königsallee in Düsseldorf (closed in the early 2000s). In early 1999, a small Joseph furniture collection was presented for the first time. At the turn of the millennium there were 24 Joseph boutiques and the Joseph Group Ltd. achieved a turnover of 75 million euros.

In 1999 Ettedgui and his brother Franklin sold the company to Belgian investor Albert Frère for nearly £ 100 million , for which Frère received a 54% stake in the company. 18% of the shares remained with Joseph and Franklin Ettedgui, 18% went to fashion manager Robert Bensoussan, and 10% went to LVMH . Ettedgui himself received around £ 30 million in the deal and remained creative director; his brother Franklin COO . In 2000, Frère took over the shares of Besoussan, who had briefly assumed the role of CEO at Joseph, and thus held 72% of the company. In the meantime, the Joseph boutiques ran alongside their own line u. a. Designers like Alexander McQueen , Balenciaga , Azzedine Alaïa , John Galliano or Diane von Fürstenberg .

In 2004 there were 63 Joseph boutiques worldwide. In May 2005 the company was sold to the Japanese fashion group Onward Kashiyama, a long-time license partner of Joseph in Japan, for approximately £ 140 million. Ettedgui and his brother Franklin received an additional £ 20 million in the deal for the sale of their remaining shares. The two left the company at the end of 2005. In 2008, sales were almost 82 million euros.

The headquarters of Joseph Ltd. is in the London district of Fulham, the design studio is in Paris. The Joseph collections are priced around 30% to 40% below the prices of designer fashion, which is also offered in the Joseph boutiques. The men's fashion of the brand, Joseph Homme, was mainly sold in Japan between 2005 and 2015 and has since been available again on international markets. Although third-party brands continue to be offered in some Joseph stores, their own brand accounted for 87% of annual sales in 2015. Annual sales in 2014 were £ 63m, of which £ 42m were generated in the UK and Ireland. Since the beginning of 2014 Joseph has been represented with a fashion show at London Fashion Week .
