Joseph Gareis (sculptor)
Joseph Hieronymus Ferdinand Gareis (born August 7, 1778 in Klosterfreedom , Upper Lusatia ; † April 14, 1844 in Dresden ) was a German draftsman and sculptor .
Life
Joseph Gareis was the second son of the trader and master carpenter Johann Gareis and his wife Johanne nee Fischer, he was the younger brother of the painter and draftsman Franz Gareis (1775-1803) and the older brother of the chamber musician Gottlieb Gareis (1781-1859), des Master carpenter Johann Gareis (1785–1856), Bartholomäus Gareis (1789–1859) and painter Anton Johann Gareis (1793–1863). He probably learned to draw at the Meißen drawing school and / or at the Dresden Art Academy . He later learned sculpture from master Joseph Jäntsch in Ostritz. In 1807 he married the doctor's daughter Barbara Mattausch in the Bohemian town of Wernstadt . The marriage produced five sons and three daughters. Around 1811 he worked as a sculptor and created decorative tombs, altars and reliefs in Upper Lusatia, Saxony , Bohemia and Silesia . He trained young artists like Franz Schiller (1815–1857) in his workshop . After 1822 he left Ostritz and moved to Dresden and lived in Pirnschen Gasse (Pirnaische Gasse) 10. He died there at the age of 66.
