Life

From 1822 to 1826 he studied Catholic theology at the University of Tübingen . After being ordained a priest in 1827, he became a repetitee at Wilhelmsstift . In 1831 he became pastor in Mögglingen . In 1839 he was elected as a member of the Württemberg state parliament, where he resigned when he took over the chair for moral theology and New Testament exegesis in Tübingen in 1841. He was positive about the Josephine reforms of Catholic religious education. With his synoptic compilation of 1842 he is one of the Catholic pioneers of the two-source theory . The Roman expert in each case was Augustin Theiner . Gehringer had already given up his chair in 1849 in the face of opposition from his ultramontane faculty colleagues Carl Joseph Hefele and Johannes Evangelist Kuhn . He became a pastor in Kochertürn and died in 1856 on a scientific trip to Palestine in the Franciscan hospice in Jerusalem . He is buried there too.
