history

Kocherbrücke in Kochertürn

The place name is probably derived from Kocherturm and refers to a former tower. The origin of the name of Dorn (= place rich in thorns ) or a connection with the gentlemen of Dürn who were wealthy in that area seems plausible. Like Neuenstadt, Kochertürn was originally a fiefdom of the von Weinsberg family . A mill has been found in Kochertürn since 1310 and was owned by Elisabeth von Katzenellenbogen, Konrad von Weinsberg's wife. The mill went to the Wimpfen collegiate church in 1321 .

The place was sold to Kurmainz in 1335 . Since this year the parish of the place is occupied. The church in Kochertürn was the mother church for the branches in Stein am Kocher and Bürg , with which the town temporarily formed a brand cooperative .

In the early 15th century, the lords of Kochertürn appear briefly as the local nobility. Kurmainz passed the place on to the Teutonic Order in 1483 , so that Kochertürn remained Catholic even after the Reformation. The Teutonic Order built the Church of the Assumption here in 1752 and a baroque rectory in 1791/92. Administratively, Kochertürn belonged to the Deutschordensballei Franken .

Through mediatization , Kochertürn came to the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1805 . After a fire in 1809, the church had to be rebuilt. In 1907 it was connected to the Untere Kochertalbahn Bad Friedrichshall - Ohrnberg as a private line of the Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WEG). In 1931 the hamlet of Brambacher Hof was incorporated into Kochertürn. In 1933 Kochertürn had 603 inhabitants, in 1939 there were 570 and at the end of 1945 there were 609. In April 1945 the place was badly damaged during acts of war in the final days of the Second World War.

In 1961 660 inhabitants were counted. On September 1, 1972 Kochertürn was incorporated into Neuenstadt am Kocher. In 1993 the Untere Kochertalbahn and with it the Kochertürner train station were shut down. The railway tracks were dismantled in 2006, and a cycle path has been running on the route since 2009 . Also in 2006 a new road bridge was built over the Kocher.

On May 31, 2008 Kochertürn had 1,029 inhabitants.
