life and work

After finishing school and doing an apprenticeship as a typographer in Basel, Joseph Schäffler attended the conservatory there and initially worked as a jazz musician ( trombone ) before he found painting .

In his early works (from 1963) he dealt with neodadaist collages , texts and actions. After a creative period that can be assigned to abstract expressionism (1966–1972), he dealt with color field painting from 1972 to 1982 . Then he embarked on a decade-long search for traces of the cosmic effects in his drawings. In his later works, he mainly focused on research into the spiritual quality of color and its relationship to the material.

Schäffler's life's work consists essentially of large and small-format egg tempera pictures on canvas , wood, tin and paper, sometimes using various mixed techniques as well as drawings and watercolors . The pictures have been exhibited since 1964 in the Basel region, in the canton of Jura , in Geneva , in Paris , in Germany and in France. Joseph Schäffler was a member of Visarte Switzerland.
