Joseph Selbst (born October 26, 1852 in Mühlheim am Main , † December 19, 1919 in Mainz ) was a German Roman Catholic professor of exegesis of the Old Testament . Among other things, he worked on the history of church singing and other topics of liturgical science , on ecclesiology based on the Old Testament prophet books and numerous other topics of Old Testament exegesis.

Life

From 1870 he studied Catholic theology in Mainz , was ordained a priest in 1874 , then worked as a chaplain in Bensheim and from 1883 as a religion teacher in Worms , from 1887 in Mainz, most recently as vicar general . In 1886 he received his doctorate in Freiburg im Breisgau with a thesis on The Church of Jesus Christ according to the prophecy of the prophets , and in 1892 he was professor of Old Testament exegesis. The magazine Der Katholik , which is committed to the Catholic Kulturkampf and Neuscholasticism , was published from 1907 to 1918 at times.
