Joseph Valentin Eybel
Joseph Valentin Sebastian Eybel ( pseudonym : Reiner Meisel ; born March 3, 1741 in Vienna , † June 30, 1805 in Linz ) was an Austrian publicist .
Life
Eybel attended the Jesuit high school in Vienna . With the Jesuits he then also took up the study of philosophy in order to be accepted into the clergy. However, he changed his plans and in 1765 went to Graz as a government adjunct , but returned to Vienna. There he began studying law at the University of Vienna . There he received his doctorate in law and was further promoted by Paul Joseph von Riegger . In his successor he became an associate professor at the University of Vienna in 1773 and rose to full professor of canon law in 1777 . As a result of the publication of his Introductio in jus ecclesiasticum catholicorum , he fell out of favor and had to give up his professorship in 1779.
In 1779, Eybel moved to Linz as a district administrator to the department in spiritual and tolerance matters , where he played a major role in the abolition of the monastery . In 1782 he published the anonymous work What is the Pope? as well as other polemics against church doctrines, whereby on November 20, 1784 he was banned from church with the papal bull Super soliditate . In the same year his work Introductio in jus ecclesiasticum catholicorum was put on the index by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . He was due to his church critical activity in 1787 again forced to make a change of scenery and went as Gubernialrat to Innsbruck . In 1797, however, he returned to Linz.
