Joseph Werner , called Joseph Werner, the Younger (born June 22, 1637 in Bern , Switzerland ; † September 21, 1710 ) was a Swiss miniature painter , etcher and painter of the Baroque era .

Life

He received his training first from his father, the lesser-known painter Joseph Werner (the elder) and then in Frankfurt am Main from Matthäus Merian the younger (1621–1687). Around 1654 he went to Rome , where he copied paintings by Pietro da Cortona and Andrea Sacchi and made a name for himself as a painter of miniatures and allegories . He was soon invited to many important royal courts in Europe to do commissioned work.

Werner was also called by Louis XIV to his Versailles court and to Paris, where he continued his work as a portraitist . He later worked in Augsburg , including for the Fugger , and in 1667 married his colleague Anna Maria, the sister of the Augsburg painter Johann Ulrich Mayr (1629–1704). In Augsburg in 1680 Werner created the allegory for the marriage on the occasion of the marriage of the Grand Dauphin of France, Ludwig of France, with Princess Maria Anna of Bavaria . Later he worked in Vienna , Berlin and again in his home town of Bern.

Werner liked to portray his models as gods and goddesses, like his famous portrait of Therese Kunigunde of Poland as Diana, the goddess of hunting . Among other things, he created a portrait of Louis XIV as Apollo in the triumphal chariot. In addition to his allegorical portraits, Werner also painted purely mythological miniature scenes .

From 1695 to 1710 Werner was a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts , from 1695 to 1700 he was director of all electoral paintings in Berlin and other palaces.
