Joshua Buatsi (* 14. March 1993 in Accra , Ghana ) is a British boxer in light heavyweight . He qualified to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and won a bronze medal.

Amateur career

Joshua Buatsi was English Junior Champion in 2010 and 2011, Champion of Ghana in 2013, and English Champion in 2014 and 2015. In 2014 he won the Golden Gong Tournament in Macedonia and the Heidelberg Round Robin Tournament in Germany. In 2015 he won the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Hungary, the first internationally significant tournament. He also received two appearances in the World Series of Boxing , but lost to Peter Müllenberg from the Netherlands and Pawel Siljagin from Russia.

While he was eliminated in the first fight against Teymur Məmmədov from Azerbaijan at the European Games 2015 in Baku , he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Samokow after losing to Peter Müllenberg in the semi-final. In October 2015 he started at the World Championships in Doha and beat the South Korean Kim Hyeongkyu in the preliminary round , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Cuban Julio César La Cruz .

In December 2015 Buatsi won the Olympic test event in Rio with victories over Devanshu Jaiswal from India, Serge Michel from Germany and finally Peter Müllenberg. In April 2016 he surprisingly won the European Olympic qualification in Samsun . He prevailed against Sjarhej Nowikau from Belarus, Alejandro Camacho from Spain, Serge Michel from Germany, Oleksandr Chyschnjak from Ukraine and in the final again against Peter Müllenberg.

He won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games after being eliminated in the semifinals against Aedilbek Nijasymbetow . Previously he had defeated Kennedy Katende , Elshod Rasulov and Abdelhafid Benchabla .

Professional career

He made his professional debut in July 2017. In July 2018, he won the WBA International light heavyweight title by knocking out Andrejs Pokumeiko in the first round. His first two title defenses, he won each by knockout in the first round against Tony Averlant and Renold Quinlan.

In March 2019, he won the British championship with a TKO win against Liam Conroy. In June 2019, he also defeated the Mexican Marco Peribán by TKO in the fourth round. He won his fourth title defense of the WBA International Belt in August 2019 through a knockout against the Canadian Ryan Ford.
