Joshua Richard Sanes (* 1949 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American neuroscientist and molecular biologist at Harvard University . He is best known for his work on the formation of synapses , especially in the area of the retina of the eye (retina).

As a high school student, Sanes worked part-time in Robert Guthrie's lab . Sanes graduated from Yale University with a degree in biochemistry and psychology from Paul Greengard in 1970 . In 1976 he received a Ph.D. from John Hildebrand at Harvard University. in neurobiology . After a year at the Office of Technology Assessment in Washington, DC , Sanes returned to Harvard University to work as a postdoctoral fellow with Uel Jackson McMahan and later with Zach W. Hall at the University of California, San Francisco , on the formation of synapses .

In 1980, Sanes received his first teaching position at the Washington University School of Medicine , where he worked for more than 20 years, most recently as a professor . Also in 1980 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). In 1986 and 1999 he spent a sabbatical in France, 1986 at the Pasteur Institute , and 1999 at the University of Marseille . In 2004 he received a chair in molecular biology and cell biology at Harvard University .

Together with John Merlie, Sane identified signaling molecules ( including laminins ) with which synaptic partners form, change and maintain their connection. Using the visual system in vertebrates , Sanes studied how axons of neurons among the cells they encounter as they grow find the right ones to connect to. Further work (together with Jeff Lichtman ) tries to depict these processes in living test animals over a longer period of time. More recent work deals with the genes for protocadherins .

Sanes became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1992 , a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2002, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007 . In 2000, Sanes received the W. Alden Spencer Award , in 2017 he was awarded the Gruber Prize for Neuroscience , and in 2018 the Perl-UNC Neuroscience Prize .

Joshua Sanes is married to Susan Corcoran, a lawyer. The couple have two children.
