Jost Amman

Jost Amman , also Jobst Amman and latinized Jodocus Amman (* 1539 in Zurich ; † March 1591 in Nuremberg ), was a Swiss-German draftsman , etcher and engraver , shape cutter , painter and author.

Life

The Swiss-born Amman, whose father was the evangelical clergyman Johann Jakob Ammann , came to Nuremberg in 1561 to work with Virgil Solis . When he died a year later, despite the workshop that his widow had continued, he left a void into which Amman soon grew. In 1577 he received the citizenship of the city and lived there until his death. He is considered one of the most important draftsmen and form cutters of his time. He published numerous books with woodcuts , including family books, tournament books, war books, heraldic books, costume books, herbal books, pharmacopoeias, animal books and midwifery books. He also created illustrations for the Bible, editions by ancient and contemporary authors and non-fiction books in various fields, including religious and historical topics, legal topics such as hunting and forestry law, agriculture and the art of hunting. His woodcuts are characterized by the elegant, somewhat mannered slimness of the figures. His extensive work is also of cultural and historical interest due to the detailed observation and everyday depiction of professions and costumes.

Amman also made sights (for example for stained glass and architectural details of the Neubaukirche , Würzburg's university church) and also wrote art-technical and art-theoretical writings.
