Juan Downey
Juan Downey (born May 11, 1940 in Santiago de Chile , † June 9, 1993 in New York City ) was a Chilean - American video artist and illustrator.
life and work
Juan Downey was born in Santiago de Chile in 1940. He completed a degree in architecture at the Pontifical Catholic University in 1961 with a bachelor's degree . In 1963 he went to Paris for two years, where he learned engraving techniques in Hayter's Atelier 17 on Rue Daguerre . In 1965 he moved to New York City and studied at the Pratt Institute , where he later also taught.
From 1971 Downey traveled regularly with a Portapak video camera, acquired in 1968, to the Yanomami who live in the Amazon , in order to “encounter one's own self in South America” and to deal with the western colonial perception of the “other”. His video series Trans Americas consists of over 30 video tapes and installations . One of them is The Laughing Alligator (1979). The Thinking Eye is a series of videos. Two videos from this series are Shifters (1984) and JS Bach (1986).
Downey also produced drawings , spiral structures reminiscent of simplified mandalas , and performances .
In 1993 Juan Downey died. With her work Mortal Coils / mortal sleeves, Carolee Schneemann commemorated her friends who died in 1993/1994.
