Juan Luis Segundo

Juan Luis Segundo SJ (born October 31, 1925 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † January 17, 1996 ibid), philosopher and theologian . He is an important and early proponent of the theology of liberation .

Life

Segundo had been a Jesuit since 1941 , he studied philosophy and theology in Buenos Aires ( licentiate in philosophy 1952), Leuven (licentiate in theology) and Paris (doctor of philosophy 1963).

He then worked as a university chaplain, headed the Pedro Fabro Center for Social Research and Action in Montevideo and published the magazine “Perspectivas de Diálogo” until in 1975 the government had to shut down the center and discontinue the magazine. After that he continued to work with various lay groups.

Segundo taught at universities in Europe, North and Latin America (including Harvard, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Birmingham and Sâo Paulo), but never held an academic position in Uruguay.
