Uncovering tampering by a colleague

On December 19, 2018, Der Spiegel announced through its editor-in-chief Ullrich Fichtner that the Spiegel journalist Claas Relotius , who has received numerous journalist awards, had "manipulated his own stories on a large scale". The forgeries were uncovered after Juan Moreno, who had worked with Relotius on the Jaeger's border report , noticed inconsistencies in the text in November 2018, checked information and turned to the head of the department with his suspicions. Because Der Spiegel did not initially believe his allegations, Moreno researched his colleague Relotius in the USA at his own expense. The editorial management was difficult to convince, initially stuck to the multiple award winner Relotius and the department management told Moreno that the case would have consequences for either Relotius or Moreno. In a later interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Moreno explained: “The story of Relotius ended with a shot fired by the border guards. I only got this conclusion in the second draft of the text. If I'm there someone potentially shooting Mexicans, I definitely won't mention that in my second draft of the text. That's probably more my starting point. "

At the end of March 2019, it was announced that Moreno was working on a book on the Relotius case entitled A Thousand Lines of Lies. The Relotius system and German journalism appeared in autumn 2019 and its film rights have already been granted. In May 2019 Moreno was awarded the Lighthouse Prize for 2019.

Moreno saved the mirror for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

For his services to these revelations, Moreno was awarded the title “ Journalist of the Year ” by Medium Magazin in December 2019 .
