The Juice Express is a reefer ship of the Dutch reefer shipping company Seatrade , which was built for the transport of frozen and chilled orange juice.
history
The new building project Juice Express was put out to tender in 2014. The ship was built by the Guangxin Shipbuilding & Heavy Industry in China according to the plans of Groot Ship Design from the Netherlands. The launch took place on May 6, 2017. The ship was christened and delivered on March 12, 2018. It replaces the Joint Frost (2,595 GT, 2,850 dwt) delivered in 1979 by the Norwegian shipyard Vard Brattvaag , which Seatrade has been using since the mid-1990s to transport orange juice concentrate primarily between Costa Rica and the US state of Florida .
Ship description
The Juice Express is 100 m long and 15.4 m wide with a side height of 8.75 m and 4364 GT and has a load capacity of 4600 dwt .
With the use of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to optimize the hull shape of the underwater hull in the design, model tests followed at the MARIN model research institute in Wageningen . One of the special features of the ship is a cross-bow optimized by Groot , which saves fuel and also improves behavior in heavy seas. The underwater hull shape, which has been improved in several steps, in connection with the controllable pitch propeller with optimized diameter means that the Juice Express can hold almost twice as much charge as the Joint Frost and has a comparable fuel consumption at the same speed. Therefore, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) required by the IMO was exceeded by around 20%.
The four - stroke diesel engine of the type MAK 8M25C TII, which has a rated output of 2665 kW as the main engine, drives a controllable pitch propeller . With the nominal speed of 100 / min, the Juice Express reaches a speed of 11 knots . A shaft generator and three auxiliary diesel generators, each with 320 kW, provide power. The ship is equipped with a transverse thruster control system.
Cargo and cargo handling
Three of the four refrigerated holds (rooms 1, 2, 4) are insulated and are kept at minus degrees on the loading and ballast journey. They are equipped with stainless steel tanks for holding a total of 2346 m³ of frozen juice concentrate. Room 1 and 2 are divided with bulkheads so that different temperatures of the tanks are possible here. Cargo space no. 3 is a box-shaped cargo space that can also be cooled. It offers space for 15 refrigerated containers or conventional refrigerated loads. Alternatively, dry cargoes and containers can also be loaded here. There is space for more containers on the 900 m² deck. There are 58 connections for refrigerated containers. The hatch covers for hold 3 have been reinforced for the transport of containers. A crane on the starboard side is used to handle dry cargo and containers.
A nitrogen system was installed to prevent the cargo from oxidizing and to keep the empty tanks clean . This means that all twelve tanks can be made inert . For loading and unloading, a shuttle line enables nitrogen to be supplied and discharged to and from land. The ship's own nitrogen generator has a capacity of 250 m³ per hour with a concentration of 99% nitrogen.
