Julian Yu

Julian Yu (born September 2, 1957 in Beijing ) is a Chinese composer . He has lived in Australia since 1985 .

Yu wrote his first compositions at the age of twelve. He first studied composition at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing and from 1980 to 1982 with Jōji Yuasa and Shin'ichirō Ikebe at the Tokyo Music Academy . From 1977 to 1980 he taught at the Beijing Conservatory of Music.

After emigrating in 1985, he taught at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University . In 1988 he was a fellow at Tanglewood Music Center , where he was tutored by Hans Werner Henze and Oliver Knussen . The University of Melbourne awarded him a Doctor of Music . From 2005 to 2007 he was a fellow there.

His works found u. a. at the IGNM World Music Festival , the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival , the Munich Biennale and the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival Hearing. He has received orders from BBC Proms and IRCAM , for example . The interpreters included u. a. the Ensemble InterContemporain , the Ensemble Modern , the London Sinfonietta and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra .
