Julie Elizabeth Czerneda (born April 11, 1955 in Exeter , Ontario ) is a Canadian science fiction and fantasy author and editor of anthologies .

Life

Czerneda is the daughter of Everett Norman and Joy Margaret Norman, née Starink. She studied biology at the University of Waterloo , where she graduated with a Bachelor with Honors in 1976 . In the same year she married the computer specialist Roger Henry Czerneda, with whom she has two children. After postgraduate studies at the University of Saskatchewan and Queen's University in Kingston (Ontario) , she worked at the University of Waterloo until 1982. From 1985 she was an author and publisher, from 1991 to 1998 she headed the company she founded, Czerneda Publishing . In addition to her literary work, she has published several books on career planning for women and gives workshops on the subject and creative writing .

Her first SF short story First Contact Inc. appeared in 1997 in the anthology First Contact edited by Martin Greenberg and Larry Segriff at DAW Books , where her other books were also published. In the same year she published her first novel A Thousand Words for Stranger , which was also the first volume in The Clan Chronicles series with a total of nine novels, which came in 9th place at the 1998 Locus Awards . In 1998, Beholder's Eye , the first volume in the Web Shifters series, which has since grown into a trilogy, was published , with which it was nominated for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in Science Fiction in the same year .

Her SF is largely attributable to the Space Opera , with the convincing representation of extraterrestrial species and biologies and, in connection with this, the (first) contact between humans and aliens taking a central position.
