biography

Cousineau won the slalom and giant slalom of the Whistler Cup in 1996 and first took part in FIS races in November of the same year . From February 1997, he played in the Nor-Am Cup , the North American continental championship. The first victory in an FIS race he achieved in December 1998. At the Junior World Championships 2001 in Verbier , he just missed the bronze medal as fourth in the Super-G . From 2001 Cousineau was able to establish himself in the top ranks in the Nor-Am Cup. In the 2002/03 season he was fourth overall. He repeated this result in 2003/04 ; he also won the giant slalom classification.

Cousineau had his world cup premiere on October 27, 2002 at the giant slalom in Sölden . He scored his first World Cup points on January 14, 2003 when he was twelfth in the giant slalom classic on the Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden . Five days later he was tenth in the Lauberhorn slalom in Wengen . He stayed without a result at the 2003 World Championships in St. Moritz , where he was eliminated in slalom and giant slalom. Another tenth place in the World Cup he achieved on January 18, 2004 again in the slalom in Wengen. However, his performance was inconsistent, in most races he was eliminated in the first round. For almost the entire 2004/05 season, Cousineau had to pause due to a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee. He lost the connection to the top of the world and had to end the 2006/07 season prematurely due to injuries. In contrast, he dominated the Nor-Am Cup during the 2007/08 season : He was overall winner, first in the giant slalom classification and second in the slalom classification.

Exactly five years after his last top 10 result in the World Cup, Julien Cousineau finished ninth in the Wengen slalom on January 18, 2009 for the next time among the top ten. In his second World Championship participation in 2009 in Val-d'Isère , however, he failed in the slalom. In the 2009/10 World Cup season , the Canadian concentrated exclusively on slalom and no longer took part in giant slaloms or super combinations. For the first time he was largely spared from failures and caught up with the world's best. He was in the top 20 six times, including two in the top ten, and improved to 14th place in the Slalom World Cup.

The best World Cup result of his career to date was achieved by Cousineau on January 26, 2010 at the night slalom on the Planai in Schladming , where he finished fifth. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he finished eighth as the best of the Canadian slalom team. He also started the 2010/11 season as eighth of the Levi slalom with a top 10 result. A month later, he equalized his previous best result with fifth place in Val-d'Isère. He was also fifth in the slalom of the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . The 2011/12 season ended for Cousineau in early January. During the slalom in Adelboden, he suffered a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

After that, Cousineau could no longer hold onto the top of the world and ended his career after the 2014/15 season .
