August Karl Julius Hartwig (born March 20, 1823 in Helpt ; † October 15, 1913 in Weimar ) was a German gardener, landscape architect and author.

Life

Julius Hartwig was born as the son of the evangelical pastor Johann Carl Friedrich Hartwig (1778-1852) and his wife Henriette Wilhelmine, born. Masch (1785–1852), a granddaughter of the superintendent Andreas Gottlieb Masch , was born in southeast Mecklenburg . From 1833 he attended the grammar school in Neuruppin , from 1837 that in Friedland (Mecklenburg) up to the Abitur.

From 1843 to 1847 he studied at the Royal Gardening School in Potsdam; after completing the four-year course, he received the certificate “ Particularly Good” . After his apprenticeship he was employed under Gustav Meyer in the facilities of the Friedenskirche in Potsdam. Subsequently, through the mediation of Peter Joseph Lenné, he received an assistant position at Belvedere Palace (Weimar) , where he moved on April 29, 1847.

Julius Hartwig remained in the grand ducal service of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach for life . He played an important part in the redesign of the park to Belvedere through photographs and drawings. Through his collaboration with the then court gardener Eduard Petzold in Weimar , he called him to the Tiefurt Castle in 1849 , the park of which was redesigned. In 1850 he was transferred to Ettersburg Palace and Park , the summer residence of Hereditary Grand Duke Karl Alexander at the time, to help build the new palace park.

Hartwig's work appealed to the Grand Duke so much that he kept him in his service after Petzold moved to Muskau in 1852; on October 1, 1852, he became a garden manager for the palace gardens in Ettersburg. He held this position until January 1, 1858, when he took over the management of the court gardener and the park in Weimar and was promoted to court gardener. The supervision of the park and the palace gardening in Tiefurt was connected with this position, later the palace gardening and the park in Ettersburg were added. His special project was the task of partly redesigning and partly renewing the park on the Ilm in Weimar. In 1896 he was given the direction of the grand ducal state tree nursery Marienhöhe near Weimar by the State Ministry. He retained this even after his retirement as a court gardener in 1900. His successor in Weimar was Julius Sckell .

Since his time in Ettersburg he had dealt with German, French and English garden literature. After moving to Weimar, in collaboration with the publishing bookstore Bernhard Friedrich Voigt in Weimar, he published some older works, reworked in a contemporary way, as well as a whole series of his own works.
