Julius Thaeter

Julius Caesar Thaeter (born January 7, 1804 in Dresden , † November 14, 1870 in Munich ) was a German reproduction engraver .

Thaeter studied at the Dresden Academy and in Nuremberg , changed residence several times between 1826 and 1834, then worked in Munich (1834–41), Weimar (1841–43) and Dresden (1843–49), where he had been a drawing teacher since 1846 the academy was. In 1849 he was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , but gave up the professorship in 1868 and took over the management of the Kupferstichkabinett .

Thaeter was trained as a draftsman and developed himself further to become a reproduction graphic artist. In Munich he found access to the Nazarene circle and became a carton engraver . The engravings after Peter von Cornelius , Wilhelm von Kaulbach , Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld , Asmus Carstens and Moritz von Schwind deserve special mention .

In the Dresden district of Übigau and in the Nuremberg district of Mögeldorf , Thäterstrasse was named after him.
