Julius von Egloffstein (General)

Julius Emil Friedrich Freiherr von und zu Egloffstein (* May 8, 1803 in Weimar ; † December 23, 1861 in Oldenburg ) was an Oldenburg lieutenant general and from 1848/49 and 1857/61 chairman of the Oldenburg military department.

Life

origin

Julius came from the Franconian noble family Egloffstein . He was the son of Saxony-Weimar Major General Friedrich Gottfried Freiherr von und zu Egloffstein (1769-1848) and his second wife Dorothea, nee von Lenthe (1775-1840).

Military career

Like his father, Egloffstein entered the military, first serving in the Bavarian Army from 1819 to 1821 and then from 1822 to 1830 in the troop contingent of Sachsen-Weimar. In 1829 he was appointed captain and two years later he moved to Oldenburg as captain, adjutant and chamberlain . Here he made friends with Ludwig Starklof . In 1839 Egloffstein took over the management of the Oldenburg Military Chancellery as a member of the board and was promoted to major in 1846 . On September 28, 1848 he was appointed a member of the State Ministry , in which he headed the military department until April 26, 1849. In the course of the formation of a constitutional government after the German Revolution of 1848/49 , he gave up this position and took over command of the cavalry regiment on August 28, 1850 . After the departure of Minister Berthold Diedrich Römer , he was reappointed head of the Department of Military Affairs in the Rössing government on August 6, 1857 , making him de facto Minister of Defense of the Grand Duchy. At the same time he was promoted to colonel and appointed adjutant general to Grand Duke Peter II . In 1858 he became major general and resigned his ministerial office on November 26, 1861. On the same day he was retired with the character of a lieutenant general.

family

In his first marriage, Egloffstein was married to Sophie Johanne Friederike Freiin von Pretlack (1814–1847), the daughter of the Grand Ducal Hesse-Darmstadt Chamberlain and Chief Forester Karl Friedrich Ludwig von Pretlack . In his second marriage he was born with Caroline Louise. von Rennenkampff (1828–1906), the daughter of Lord Chamberlain Alexander von Rennenkampff (1783–1854), married. His son Leonhard (1842–1904) was an Oldenburg Chamberlain and Prussian Major General. The daughter Johanna (1842–1926) married the painter Friedrich von Winterfeldt (1830–1893).
