Leonhard Berthold Wilhelm Julius Freiherr von und zu Egloffstein (born August 18, 1842 in Oldenburg ; † July 31, 1904 ) was a Prussian major general and legal knight of the Order of St. John .

Life

origin

Leonhard came from the captain's branch of the 2nd Franconian line of the noble family von Egloffstein . He was a son of the Oldenburg lieutenant general Julius von und zu Egloffstein (1803–1861) and his wife Sophie, née Freiin von Pretlack (1814–1847).

Military career

Egloffstein joined the Grand Ducal Oldenburg Cavalry Regiment on April 3, 1859 and was promoted to lieutenant in New Year 1862. As such, he took part in the Main Campaign in 1866 during the German War . After the peace treaty he became a regimental adjutant and in this position in mid-November 1869 Prime Lieutenant . During the war against France he was wounded in the kidney and right shoulder by a lance stab in the battle of Mars-la-Tour . He also suffered a contusion of the head from a sword blow.

Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and the Knight's Cross II. Class of the House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig with Swords, Egloffstein was appointed head of the squadron in mid-November 1872 when he was promoted to Rittmeister . Mid March 1880 he was appointed adjutant of the 10th Division in Poznan and on April 15, 1884 Egloffstein received the character as a Major . This was followed from July 12, 1884 as a squadron chief in the Silesian Uhlan Regiment No. 2 . In mid-December 1886 he was promoted to the regiment staff as a regular staff officer and at the end of March 1890 advanced to lieutenant colonel . Two months later, Egloffstein was appointed commander of the Rhenish Uhlan Regiment No. 7 . On August 12, he was released from this command when he was transferred to the army officers, and on November 18, 1890, he was appointed commander of the Oldenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 19 , in which he began his military career in 1859. Grand Duke Peter II honored him with the Commendation of his House and Merit Order for his work in the troop leadership. Egloffstein was then aggregated into the regiment on April 9, 1891 , appointed commander of the 1st Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 17 on January 27, 1892 and promoted to colonel at the end of March 1893 . In position à la suite of his regiment, Egloffstein was given command of the 33rd Cavalry Brigade in Metz on May 13, 1895, and in this position was promoted to major general on October 18, 1896. A year later, he was placed with the statutory board for disposition .

Egloffstein married Luise von Grün (* 1847) in Oldenburg on August 30, 1867. The marriage resulted in three daughters and one son:
