Juniperus flaccida is a species of plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It occurs in the southern USA as well as in Mexico.
description
Juniperus flaccida grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of up to 12, in exceptional cases up to 17 meters and a breast diameter of up to 82 centimeters. The trunk branches 1 to 2 meters above the ground. The branches, like the 0.5 to 1 centimeter thick twigs, hang from the trunk and form a spherical to broadly conical crown . The gray to cinnamon or red-brown bark flakes off in broad, fibrous strips. The smooth, gray bark of the branches and twigs may peel off in broad strips or sheets.
The species forms two different forms of opposite leaves . The needles that run down are 4 to 6 millimeters long and are not frosted on the top. The scale-shaped leaves are egg-shaped to oblong-egg-shaped with a length of 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters and a width of 1 to 1.5 millimeters. They have a rounded or tapered tip and overlap one-fifth to a quarter of their length. All leaf shapes are green in color, elongated in shape, have finely serrated leaf edges, whereby the perforation can only be seen under the microscope. They also have a gland on the underside of the leaf.
Juniperus flaccida is dioecious-segregated ( diocesan ) and the flowering period extends from late winter to late spring. The berry cones are spherical with a diameter of 0.5 to 2 centimeters and have a straight or curved stem. They lignify towards maturity and are light brown to brownish purple in color and frosted. Each cone carries 1 to 13 seeds which are 3 to 6 millimeters long and 3 to 4 millimeters wide.
Distribution and location
The natural range of Juniperus flaccida includes almost all of Mexico and Texas .
Juniperus flaccida thrives at altitudes of 900 to 2900 meters.
Systematics
It was first described as Juniperus flaccida in 1838 by Diederich Franz Leonhard von Schlechtendal in Linnaea , Volume 12, Page 495. Synonyms for Juniperus flaccida Schltdl. are Juniperus foetida var. flaccida (Schltdl.) Spach and Sabina flaccida (Schltdl.) Antoine .
The species is divided into up to four varieties :
- Juniperus flaccida var. Flaccida is the nominate form and occurs in almost the entire range.
- Juniperus flaccida var. Gigantea (Schltdl.) Gaussen
- Juniperus flaccida var. Martinezii (Pérez de la Rosa) Silba occurs only in small populations in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes , Guanajuato , Jalisco , San Luis Potosí and Veracruz . A synonym is Juniperus martinezii Pérez de la Rosa .
- Juniperus flaccida var. Poblana Martínez occurs in southern Mexico. It is also regarded by some authors as a separate species Juniperus poblana (Martínez) RPAdams .
Hazard and protection
Juniperus flaccida is listed as “not endangered” on the IUCN Red List . The martinezii variety is listed as "low risk". However, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary.
