from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yuri Alekseyevich Mitropolski ( Russian Юрий Алексеевич Митропольский , Ukrainian Юрій Олексійович Митропольський Jurij Oleksijowytsch Mytropolskyj , English transcription Yurii Alekseevich Mitropolskiy or Mitropol'ski * December 21, 1916 . Jul / 3. January  1917 greg. In Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 14 June 2008 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian- Soviet mathematician.

Life

Mitropolski studied from 1938 at the Kiev State University . During the Second World War he served on the front lines, studied at the Kazakh University of Alma Ata, where the University of Kiev had been evacuated, and then served in the artillery. After his military service from 1946 he was at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev, was in 1948 with Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Bogoljubow and was from 1949 a senior scientist at the Institute for Structural Mechanics. In 1951 he received his habilitation from Bogoljubow (Russian doctorate) with the dissertation Slow Processes in Nonlinear Vibration Systems with Many Degrees of Freedom . In 1953 he became professor in Kiev and head of department at the Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy and from 1958 to 1988 its director. His successor was his student and colleague Anatoli Mikhailovich Samoilenko (* 1938).

He dealt with dynamic systems, nonlinear vibrations and generally asymptotic methods in nonlinear mechanics (extension of the method of Krylow and Bogolyubov) and qualitative methods in the theory of differential equations.

In 1986 he received the Lyapunov gold medal . He was a member of the Ukrainian (1961) and Russian Academy of Sciences .
