Jyrki Aho (born July 14, 1974 in Jyväskylä ) is a former Finnish ice hockey defender who has been working as a coach since retiring. Most recently he was head coach at EC VSV from the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .

Career

Jyrki Aho comes from the offspring of Diskos Jyväskylä . Between 1995 and 2000 he played for various teams in the Finnish third division, today's Suomi-sarja . In 2000 he ended his career and became a youth coach with the Espoo Blues . In 2003 he switched to Mikkelin Jukurit from the second division, the Mestis, as assistant coach .

In the 2006/07 season he looked after the team of Jungadler Mannheim from the DNL as an assistant coach. The following season, Aho returned to Finland and became Risto Dufva's assistant coach . In the 2008/09 game year, JYP won its first Finnish championship in the club's history. The following season, JYP became the regular season winner and was eliminated in the semi-finals. After Duvfa's resignation, Aho became head coach of JYP in autumn 2011 and won his second league title with JYP in 2012. For this success he also received the Kalevi Numminen trophy as the best coach in the SM-liiga.

In 2013 he left JYP and was given a two-year contract as the new head coach of Espoo Blues. Under Aho's leadership, the Blues occupied middle places in the regular season and reached the play-offs. The 2015/16 season was marked by financial difficulties for the Espoo club, which initially led to the sale of players and later to bankruptcy. In March 2016, Porin presented Ässät Aho as the new head coach before he was fired in November 2017.

In spring 2018 he became the national coach of the Chinese national team and took fourth place with them at the World Cup of Division IIA . He then was assistant coach at Kunlun Red Star from Beijing , who play in the KHL , until January 2019 .
