The Kögel Trailer GmbH , headquartered in Burtenbach was originally in 1934 founded by Franz Xaver Kögel and is now one of Europe's largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles , u. a. for trailers and semi-trailers .

history

Foundation and Second World War

On May 1st, 1934, Franz Xaver Kögel took over his teacher's small wagon workshop in Neu-Ulm . In 1937 Kögel moved to Ulm on Blaubeurer Strasse. During the Second World War , the production facility in Blaubeurer Strasse was almost completely destroyed in 1944.

After 1945

In 1945, Kögel rebuilt a production facility in the former military equipment office. Kögel took the step from a craft to an industrial company in 1956 with the start of production in the newly built production halls in the Donautal industrial area. In 1962, Kögel founded “Plant 2” in Karlsdorf, near Bruchsal, for the manufacture of insulating bodies and trailers. "Plant 3" was created in 1967 with the takeover of Fahrzeugbau Wilhelm Seibel in Hanau, Hesse. Together with Dipl.-Ing. In 1969, Karl Weinmann founded FX Kögel KAMAG Transporttechnik . In 1973 Kögel acquired FAKA ( Fahrzeugwerke Kannenberg ) in Bückeburg / Lower Saxony .

With the Kamag Corporation of America , a base was established in Florida in 1980 to support the American market. In 1984, Kögel took over a vehicle construction company in Marz , Burgenland and expanded the location into the Austrian subsidiary "Kögel-Marz Ges.mbH". In 1989 a license agreement for the production of refrigerated bodies was signed with the Jinan Auto Refitting Factory company . The Kögel modular system arose from many years of experience in vehicle construction. This marked the step from one-off production to standardized series production. In 1990 Kögel took over a large part of the former state- owned company (VEB) motor vehicle factory "Ernst Grube" in the Saxon town of Werdau and expanded it into a modern, high-performance production company. The former steel construction company Marcam Kögel SA in Poland was incorporated into the Kögel Group in 1990 and manufactured vehicle components for the German plants.

Corporation

  • 1991 - Kögel becomes a stock corporation: With its listing on the stock exchange, Kögel is the first company in the trailer and body manufacturing industry to operate as a stock corporation.
  • 1991 - License agreement with Orličan as, Czech Republic: A license agreement for the manufacture of refrigerated bodies is concluded with the Czech company Orličan in Choceň. In addition to the manufacture of large assemblies for the German production companies, the plant also becomes an important supplier of complete vehicles for the Czech market.
  • 1992 - Joint venture in China: The successful license production leads to the founding of the JINAN KÖGEL SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE CO. LTD. emerged.
  • 1993 - Kögel takes over parts of Kässbohrer: With the takeover of the semi-trailer and trailer production of Karl Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke GmbH in Burtenbach, Bavaria, Kögel takes over the leading supplier in the field of commercial vehicle bodies and trailers for general cargo, combined transport and vehicles for the construction industry.
  • 1994 - Another China joint venture: With the establishment of the joint venture "JINAN HONGQI-Kögel TRAILER MAKING Co. Ltd.", the production of semitrailers and dry cargo bodies for general cargo transports begins in China. Also in 1994, "JINAN SAF AXLE Co. Ltd." begins with the production of trailer axles with the participation of the Austrian Kögel-Marz Ges.mbH.
  • 1996 - Foundation of Kögel as: Kögel as is founded in June to integrate the Orlican as subsidiary into the Kögel Group and to carry out the necessary restructuring measures at the same time.
  • 1999 - Laying of the foundation stone in Burtenbach: The expansion of the Burtenbach plant begins around 50 kilometers away from the Kögel headquarters in Ulm.
  • 2000 - Project "Kögel 2000": The plant in Burtenbach becomes the most modern trailer plant in Europe with extensive investments.
  • 2001 - Quality thanks to KTL: As an absolute novelty, Kögel introduces a system for cathodic dip painting with zinc phosphating as corrosion protection.
  • 2003 - Competence centers: Kögel sets up two production competence centers: Burtenbach for open bodies (flatbed vehicles and tippers), Werdau for closed bodies (dry freight and insulated box bodies). Refrigerated vehicle production is relocated from Karlsdorf to Werdau, and production at the Karlsdorf plant is discontinued.

Bankruptcy of the stock corporation and a fresh start

  • 2004 - Filed for insolvency: On Monday, January 26th, Kögel Fahrzeugwerke AG in Ulm files for insolvency proceedings. Around 1,200 employees are affected. Later in the year, parts of the former stock corporation are taken over by Trailer Holding GmbH, Munich. Foundation of "Kögel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH". Burtenbach becomes the new company headquarters. Other parts, e.g. B. KAMAG and the factory in Werdau are sold.
  • 2006 - A successful new beginning: Kögel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH produces around 12,000 vehicles per year with around 1,000 employees. More than two thirds are delivered to other European countries.
  • 2007 - record year: sales of 450 million euros and annual production of 24,000 vehicles. Establishment of the company among the ten largest trailer manufacturers in the world.

  • 2009 - Insolvency: The emerging global economic and financial crisis leads to a noticeable drop in orders at Kögel. The production capacity is throttled. On August 3, 2009, Kögel Fahrzeugwerke GmbH had to file for insolvency . On October 30th, 2009 the insolvency proceedings were opened and the auditor Arndt Geiwitz from Neu-Ulm was appointed as insolvency administrator .
  • 2009 - New beginning: Kögel is taken over by the entrepreneur Ulrich Humbaur from Gersthofen , who continues to pursue a two-brand strategy to this day and thus ensures the independence of the Kögel brand. A new company was founded under the name of Kögel Trailer GmbH & Co. KG , based in Burtenbach. The general partner Kögel Trailer Verwaltungs-GmbH is based in Gersthofen.
  • 2012 - New competence center "Kögel PurFerro GmbH & Co. KG": Kögel acquires the competence center for sandwich panels in Duingen from the European Van Company. The plant was founded by Graaff-Waggonbau in Duingen in the 1970s and quickly developed into a sought-after supplier for dry freight and refrigerated box manufacturers. Kögel is once again a manufacturer of box bodies that has all the skills in-house.

Euro Trailer Cargo Rail

The Kögel product portfolio in the forwarding business includes semi-trailers (“trailers”) from 18 t to 42 t GVW . These include the Kögel Cargo, Kögel Light, Kögel Mega platform vehicles and the height-optimized Mega perfect height with an exterior height of exactly four meters. Industry-specific solutions from the Kögel Cool and Kögel Box series, the premium refrigerated box Cool - PurFerro quality and the Box - PurFerro quality are available as box vehicles. The swap systems Kögel Swap, Kögel Combi and Kögel Port as well as the Chassis Cargo, Mega and Cool round off the product range for the freight forwarding industry. For the construction industry - models from 30 t GVW - there is the building material saddle Multi, the Kögel low loader as a 3-axle or 4-axle turntable and a 3-axle semi-trailer variant. Dump trucks are available in 2-axle and 3-axle versions with 24 m³ or 27 m³.
