Heimersdorf is a district of Cologne in the borough of Chorweiler . The district is about 9 kilometers north of the city center.

location

Heimersdorf is surrounded by the Cologne districts of Longerich , Lindweiler , Weiler / Volkhoven , Chorweiler and Seeberg . In the east it is bounded by Mercatorstrasse and in the south by Militärringstrasse.

history

The earliest surviving evidence of the later place name Heimersdorf dates from the late 12th century: between 1178 and 1183 a Johan de Heimersdorp was present as a witness in a legal transaction. The first documented mention of a farm in Heimersdorf comes from the year 1314. In this document, the Cologne hereditary bailiff Gerhard confirms that the Cologne Augustinian convent of St. Maria Magdalena, which was located on the Blaubach and was called the "Weißfrauenkloster", owned goods in Heimersdorf. For many centuries the "Heimersdorp" farm was alone between Volkhoven and Longerich .

The Weißfrauenkloster did not manage its - relatively remote - farm in Heimersdorf itself, but leased it on a long lease. In 1394 the tenant had to pay one sumer rye per acre and 20 cologne marks. In 1581 the rent was 26 Malter rye, 12 Malter barley, capons (roosters), "hammels", lambs, 2 calves and eggs. These charges changed only slightly over long periods of time. In the course of the centuries the leaseholders actually became the owners of the land and had a hereditary right of use with an often low tax burden.

Due to the French secularization laws, the Cologne white women's monastery was dissolved on the 13th Fructidor of year X (August 31, 1803) and the property was sold. The Heimersdorfer Hof was acquired on October 25, 1810 by the Cologne citizen GA Krapp for 18,000 pounds. Heimersdorf and Volkhoven have belonged to Longerich mayor since the French era. The Heimersdorfer Hof was divided between 1810 and 1820 and the Heuserhof was built in the immediate vicinity. In 1820 Heimersdorf (Heimerhof) was given with 30 inhabitants, while Longerich 390 and the Bergheimerhöfe had 40 inhabitants. On the maps of 1807/1808 a third small farm appeared - the later Thiebach farm (Pfeilshof).

In 1888 the whole of Longerich's mayor's office was incorporated into Cologne. On an official map from 1899 there are only the three courtyards and four small houses in the area of today's Heimersdorf that Longericher citizens had built on the Volkhovener Weg.

Planned development in today's Heimersdorf area only existed since 1922 with the construction of a small settlement on Volkhovener Weg, Pulheimer Strasse and Froschackers. Other settlements followed.

The New City

Entrance to Heimersdorf

In 1958 the city of Cologne began planning the New City, a relief center in the north of Cologne; first construction phase was Heimersdorf. Road construction began in 1961. The buildings in Heimersdorf were largely completed in the years 1961 to 1965. Some of the houses were sold at very favorable terms, depending on the number of children. Probably for this reason Cologne-Heimersdorf was one of the most child-rich places in Germany in its early days. The residential construction was realized in sections. In 1964, the former Federal Chancellor and Cologne honorary citizen Konrad Adenauer visited Heimersdorf to find out about the development of the new district on the spot. Adenauer warned urgently against the construction of a high-rise estate, as it was later in Chorweiler. "People only know each other from the mostly broken elevator!"

Religions

  • 1966 Consecration of the Catholic parish church of Christ's Transfiguration on Taborplatz
  • 1967 Consecration of the Protestant community center and the youth center Magnet on Lebensbaumweg, closed in 2017 and temporarily relocated to the "Heimersdorf-Center" store center.
  • In 1979 the Mormon Congregation “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” inaugurated its church, center and library.

Demographics

Structure of the population of Cologne-Heimersdorf:

  • Share of under 18s: 14.1% (2015)
  • Proportion of over 64-year-olds: 28.7% (2015)
  • Proportion of foreigners: 9.6% (2015)
  • Unemployment rate: 5.1% (2014)

In 1990 Heimersdorf still had 6,714 inhabitants. In 2011 there were 5,836 people in Heimersdorf. Today (2019) the population is again approaching that of the early 1990s. The proportion of residents with a migration background is significantly below that of the immediately neighboring districts of Chorweiler and Seeberg-Nord and the average for the city as a whole.

For some time the district suffered from obsolescence in some areas . The problem of a demographic wave , which is typical for former new development areas, was particularly evident in areas with single-family houses from the 1960s . In the past, mostly two-generation nuclear families with children moved in; over time, the parents became seniors while the children moved away. Today, however, there is again an increased influx of younger people and families with children. The age structures are again changing in favor of young families. This leads to an increased need for kindergarten places. The Catholic elementary school ensures the educational offer in the primary sector, while the GGS "Anna-Langohr-Schule", which was previously housed in the same complex, will move to its new domicile in the summer of 2019 in the new building in Fühlinger Weg (Volkhoven-Weiler) opposite the grammar school there. The secondary school on Volkhovener Weg supplements the local educational offer - an extension of this offer to include (relocate) the special needs school from Lindweiler is planned here.

The Catholic Church is currently building a new building complex near the Heimersdorf Church, which will also house a daycare center. Heimersdorf is a district with a lively and multi-faceted club life, good shopping opportunities and a good infrastructure - however, the parking space situation around the central shopping center is somewhat limited at peak times. In January 2019, a citizens 'association for Heimersdorf and Seeberg-Süd was set up in the Fritz-Wacker-Siedlerheim in Nettesheimer Straße in order to represent the citizens' interests of these districts more effectively. In cooperation with other participants, the citizens 'association also endeavors as a non-profit association to support a future citizens' meeting place in the central area.

Culture and leisure

The system in the style of the American Radburn system with a separation of through and local traffic as well as traffic and pedestrian zones is characteristic of Heimersdorf .

Heimersdorf is a green district due to the green spaces, the many house gardens, allotment gardens and the large population of trees. In the middle of the green zone are the schools, the Roman Catholic Church of Christ's Transfiguration and the retirement and retirement home Johanniterstift Gut Heuserhof. The evangelical community center was given up in 2017, the children and youth center "Magnet" relocated to the shopping center.

Infrastructure

Stop at Cologne Volkhovener Weg

Until the 1930s, Longerich station on the Cologne – Kleve railway line was on Pingenweg in what is now Heimersdorf. The building of the former train station is still preserved today. Today the district is well connected to the regional local transport network with an underground station on the 15 ("Heimersdorf") tram in the east and the Köln Volkhovener Weg stop on the Cologne – Kleve line via the S 11 suburban railway in the northwest.

Heimersdorf has a good infrastructure thanks to the center with retail stores ("Heimersdorf-Center" shopping center), two restaurants and a bar, a hotel, doctors of all specialties. The Ursula-Kuhr-Schule is a secondary school with over 500 students from all over the north of Cologne. The Catholic Primary School Lebensbaumweg and the Anna-Langohr-Community Primary School (GGS) have shared a building complex since 1966. From the 2019/2020 school year, the GGS will leave the shared school complex and move into a modern new school building in Volkhoven / Weiler opposite the high school there. In the pre-school area, the two Christian providers each offer a day care center. The sport is represented by the KSV Heimersdorf and the DJK-Wiking.
