The Kötz rises in the Stoffenried Forest at about 516 m above sea level. NN north of the district road NU 2 / GZ 1 (Schießen (municipality: Roggenburg )) - Stoffenried (municipality: Ellzee ). The stream flowing in a northerly direction, whose catchment area is around 35 km², overcomes a height difference of around 58 m over its 13.2 km. The Kötz flows between Groß- and Kleinkötz near the bridge of the district road GZ 5 over the Günz at approx. 458 m above sea level. NN in the Günz .

Tributaries
North of Ingstetten (municipality: Roggenburg ) rises at about 530 m above sea level. NN a nameless stream or ditch that is longer than the Kötz. It flows into the Kötz in the Stoffenrieder forest - roughly at the height of Hausen (municipality: Ellzee ) at approx. 502 m above sea level. NN.
A little further north at the southernmost of the pond ponds through which the Kötz flows (approx. 495 m above sea level), the Äußere Kötz flows into the Kötz. The source of the Outer Kötz is located north of Unteregg (municipality: Roggenburg ) in the Stoffenrieder Forest at 512 m above sea level. NN.
Shortly before the confluence of the Kötz in the Günz, the Taubriedgraben flows into Großkötz at approx. 459 m above sea level. NN in the Kötz.
