Barry N. Malzberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barry Nathaniel Malzberg (* 1939 in New York City ) is an American science fiction and fantasy author and publisher.

Life

After completing his studies, Malzberg first tried to establish himself as a playwright and as an author of prose literature. He achieved his first commercial success with the publication of his surreal novel Final War in 1968 in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction , which, like almost all of his early works, appeared under the pseudonym K. M. O'Donnell . In 1965 he had started to work for the Scott Meredith Literary Agency , an activity which he continued with interruptions for the following decades.

Malzberg's writing style is very distinctive, his sentence structure often consists of long and complicated, but carefully worked out sentences with few commas. Many of his science fiction works are short, present-day narratives that deal solely with the consciousness of a single obsessive character. Its main theme, particularly in the US space program novels Beyond Apollo (1972) and The Falling Astronauts (1971), is the dehumanizing effects of bureaucracy and technology . In novels such as Galaxies (1975) and Herovit's World (1973), Malzberg uses the technique of metafiction to subordinate heroic conventions and literary limits of the so-called space opera to satire.

As editor he was u. a. for the magazines Amazing Stories and Fantastic (for both 1968) as well as for a publisher for men's magazines. In addition, he edited the anthology Final Stage with Edward L. Ferman (German editions Brennpunkt Zukunft 1 and 3), some more together with Bill Pronzini . Malzberg was a prolific writer, especially in the early 1970s. Although his literary work is largely located in the field of crime and fantasy literature, he is represented with demanding works in other genres (both under his own name and under pseudonyms such as O'Donnell or Mike Barry). He also wrote in collaboration with Pronzini, Kathe Koja and others. He also wrote the 1974 novel version of the film Phase IV by Saul Bass .

Malzberg was nominated several times for the Hugo Award and eventually won the Locus Award for his collection of historical and critical essays The Engines of the Night (1982). For his novel Beyond Apollo (German: The Venus Trauma) he received the first John W. Campbell Memorial Award in 1973 .

The author, a fan of classical music, is also a violinist who played in the premiere of works by the Thai composer and writer Somtow Sucharitkul .
