K2-72e (also known by its EPIC name EPIC 206209135.04 ) is a confirmed exoplanet . It orbits the red dwarf K2-72 in its habitable zone . It is the outermost of the four planets that the Kepler space telescope of NASA on their mission Second Light was discovered in this system. It is 227.7 light years from Earth and is in the constellation Aquarius . The exoplanet was found using the transit method , which measures the degree of darkening a planet causes when it is in front of its star.

properties

K2-72e is an Earth-like exoplanet. It has an average temperature of 289 K (16 ° C). The planet has a radius of 0.86  R . and a mass of 2.7  M , depending on its composition. The apparent magnitude of the star is unknown.

star

The planet orbits a red dwarf named K2-72 . There are three planets in this orbit in which K2-72e has the longest orbital period. This is 24 days and the orbit is about 0.38  AU . The star has a mass of 0.21  M and a radius of 0.23  R . The star has a temperature of 3497  K (3224 ° C) and its age is unknown. In contrast, the sun is 4.6 billion years old and has a surface temperature of 5778 K (5500 ° C).

Habitability

For the exoplanets K2-72e and K2-72c it was announced that they orbit in the habitable zone of their star. K2-72e has a radius of 0.86  R , making it rocky. Its star is a red dwarf with a fifth the mass of the sun . As a result, stars like K2-72 have the ability to live more than 500 to 600 billion years, 40 to 50 times as long as the sun will live.

The planet is very likely to have a bound rotation , which means that one side of the planet is always facing towards the star, the other side is always in the dark. However, there is a tiny area between these two sides where temperatures would allow liquid water to exist . In addition, a larger part of the planet could be habitable if there is a thick enough atmosphere to transfer heat to the side facing away from the star. However, the planet experiences 46% more sunlight than the earth , which would destroy the possibility of habitability again as all oceans would boil.

discovery

The information from the planet, along with information from the other three planets in the K2-72 system, was released on July 18, 2016 as part of the new results from the second mission of the Kepler spacecraft .
