The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology ( English King Abdullah University of Science and Technology , KAUST , Arabic جامعة الملك عبد الله للعلوم والتقنية, DMG Ǧāmi'at al-Malik Abd Allah li-l-'Ulum wa-t-tiqnīya ) is a university to the US model in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , on natural and engineering sciences specializes. In the QS World University Ranking , KAUST has held the top position in the citations per professor category since 2015 . The university was built by the Saudi oil production company Saudi Aramco and includes various research centers of the mineral oil company. To date, over 7,000 students from 100 countries have studied and worked at the university.
history
KAUST was opened in September 2009 and is based in Thuwal , around 50 kilometers north of Jeddah on the Red Sea . The university is named after Abdullah ibn Abd al-Aziz , who himself donated $ 10 billion for the university. About 1200 students from over 60 countries are enrolled at KAUST. The language of instruction is English.

The university is divided into three academic divisions: Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE); Computer, Electrical, and Mathematical Science and Engineering (CEMSE); Physical Science and Engineering (PSE). There are master degree programs (MS) and doctoral sprogramme ( Ph.D. ) offered. KAUST forms a research focus on renewable energies and water management . Here z. B. investigated the question of whether it is possible to farm in areas with salty seawater.
In contrast to the rest of Saudi Arabia, men and women are allowed to study and research together at KAUST ; the veil and abaya are not compulsory on campus , but western female students report restrictions, e.g. B. Gender segregation when exercising.
One of the laboratories houses the Shaheen supercomputer , which in 2016 was one of the ten most powerful supercomputers on earth.
There are also eleven research centers under the umbrella of KAUST, in which results-oriented research is carried out. The research centers support scientific projects in the fields of petroleum engineering , solar energy , membranes , supercomputing , visual computing , agriculture in desert regions , catalysis , desalination of salt water and life science .
