The Kustwacht voor het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in het Caribisch Gebied is the coast guard of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for the territory of the Dutch Caribbean .

history

The Coast Guard was set up on February 1, 1996 as a cooperation of the then countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands ( Netherlands , Netherlands Antilles and Aruba ), as Kustwacht voor de Nederlandse Antillen en Aruba (KWNA & A). With the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on October 10, 2010, the new countries Curaçao and Sint Maarten joined the cooperation. The authority was renamed Kustwacht voor Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten alsmede voor de openbare lichamen Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba , which was changed shortly afterwards to Kustwacht voor het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in het Caribisch Gebied , Kustwacht Caribisch Gebied (KWCARIB) for short .

organization

The KWCARIB is both a civil and a military organization. A total of 18 ministries from the four countries are involved. The Ministry of Defense (Ministerie van Defensie) is in charge as the supervisory authority, from whose naval budget the funds for human and material resources also come.

The other ministries involved are:

• for the Kingdom: the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken
• for the country of the Netherlands: the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Affairs of the Kingdom, the Ministry of Security and Justice, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and the Ministry of Economic Affairs
• for the country of Aruba: the Department of General Affairs, the Department of Justice, the Department of Finance, the Department of Tourism and Culture, and the Department of Economy, Communications, Energy and Environment
• for the country of Curaçao: the Ministry of General Affairs and External Relations, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Transport and Spatial Planning and the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature
• for the Land of Sint Maarten: the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Finance

The commander of the KWCARIB (Directeur Kustwacht) is also the commander of the Zeemacht Caribisch Gebied (ZMCARIB) , the command of the Royal Navy responsible for the Dutch Caribbean . The current position holder is Commandeur Hans Lodder.

KWCARIB has bases on Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten and an air station at Hato International Airport on Curaçao.

The KWCARIB ensures safety on the waters of the Dutch Caribbean . It carries out monitoring , control , search and service tasks . For this she works u. a. with the police authorities of the federal states ( Korps Politie Aruba , Korps Politie Curaçao , Korps Politie Sint Maarten and Korps Politie Caribisch Nederland ), customs and rescue organizations.

The focus here is on combating drug smuggling, illegal arms trafficking, illegal immigration, illegal fishing and environmental pollution.

The KWCARIB also runs the Search and Rescue service in the waters in which it is responsible . To this end, it operates a rescue and coordination center (RCC).

In addition, the KWCARIB has a frigate ( Karel Doorman class ) or an offshore patrol vessel (offshore patrol vessels, OPV, Holland class ), each with an on-board helicopter of the type NH90 and boarding team, available to the Koninklijke Marine (so-called . stationsschip ).
