Michał Kałwa (born August 9, 1978 in Poznan ) is a Polish ski racer and former freestyle skier . He was a member of the Polish national team in alpine skiing from 1996 to 2006 and took part in ski cross races until 2008 .

Career

Kałwa won his first FIS race in February 1996 . From 1996 to 1998 he took part in the Junior World Championships and achieved the best result in the Slalom in 1997. Slalom was his strongest discipline in the other two years. From December 1997 to December 2005 Kałwa took part in European Cup races , mainly in slalom . In these eight years he drove ten times under the fastest 30. His best result was 14th place in the slalom of Krompachy-Plejsy on January 7th, 2000. From November 1999 to January 2006 Kałwa also started in the World Cup . During the first five years he only competed in slalom, from January 2005 he also took part in world cup races in all other disciplines. However, the Pole never made it into the points, i.e. among the top 30. In none of his more than 30 slalom races, he could qualify for the second round. He was also unsuccessful in the other disciplines. The closest he came to the points on December 11, 2005 with 34th place in the super combined of Val-d'Isère .

In 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2005 Kałwa took part in the Alpine World Ski Championships . After he was eliminated in the first slalom round in 1997 , he came in 2001 in St. Anton in 29th place and in 2003 in St. Moritz in 36th place in the slalom. At the 2005 World Championships he started in all competitions except the downhill and achieved 23rd place in the combination as the best result. In February 2006, Kałwa was the only Pole to take part in the alpine competitions of the Olympic Winter Games in Turin . He came in 44th in the downhill and 45th in the Super-G, the slalom and the combination, he could not finish. In the 2006/07 season, Kałwa only sporadically took part in competitions in alpine skiing, for example the Polish championships. He won a total of 13 Polish championship titles from 2001 to 2009.

From the winter of 2004/05, Kałwa was active as a freestyle skier in addition to alpine skiing. At the Universiade 2005 he was fourth in alpine slalom and fifth in ski cross. Then he took part in a few freestyle European Cup races until 2008, in which two 17th places in ski cross in March 2008 were his best results. In March 2007 he took part in the Freestyle World Championship in Madonna di Campiglio , where he was 33rd in ski cross. Since January 2009 Kałwa has been at the start again sporadically in alpine skiing competitions.
