Kai Mahler (born September 11, 1995 in Fischenthal ) is a Swiss freestyle skier . He starts in the freestyle disciplines.

Career

Mahler has been participating in FIS and AFP World Tour competitions since 2010 . In February 2011 he won his first victory in the Slopestyle at the Austrian Freeskiing Open Rookies in Kaprun . He made his debut in the World Cup in January 2011 on Kreischberg , which he finished in fifth place in the halfpipe competition. At the 2011 World Championships in Park City , he finished 16th in the halfpipe competition. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he won the silver medal in Big Air at the New Zealand Winter Games in Cardrona . As the season progressed, he came second in Big Air at freestyle.ch in Zurich , at the Budapest Fridge Festival and in Slopestyle at the Swiss Championships in Val d'Illiez . In January 2012 he won the gold medal in the halfpipe competition at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Kühtai and the silver medal in Big Air at the subsequent Winter X Games 2012 in Aspen . The following month he won Big Air at the Frostgun Invitational in Val Thorens . At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Chiesa in Valmalenco he was Junior World Champion in Slopestyle. At the end of the season he won the Big Air at Nine Knights in Livigno and thus achieved third place in the AFP World Tour Big Air ranking.

The following season, Mahler took third place at the Relentless Freeze Festival in London and won the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge . As in the previous year, he won the silver medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2013. In January 2014, he finished third in slopestyle at the US Grand Prix and World Cup in Breckenridge . In the same month he won the bronze medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2014 in Aspen . In his first Olympic participation in 2014 in Sochi , he came in 16th place in the first-ever slopestyle competition. In March 2014 he reached third place in slopestyle at the European Freeski Open in Laax . At the Winter X Games 2015 in Aspen he finished fourth in Big Air. The following year he came fifth at the Winter X Games 2016 in Aspen and fourth place in Big Air at the X Games Oslo 2016 In March 2016 he came third in the Slopestyle at the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl .

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Mahler won his first World Cup victory at Big Air in Milan . In January 2017 he won the bronze medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2017 in Aspen . At the following World Cup in Québec , he won the World Cup again. At the X-Games Norway 2017 in Hafjell , he achieved 16th place in Big Air. At the end of the season he was Swiss Big Air Champion, tenth place in the overall World Cup and fourth place in the Big Air World Cup.
