Kajetan Kovič (born October 21, 1931 in Maribor , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , today Slovenia ; † November 7, 2014 ) was a Yugoslav and later Slovenian poet.

life and work

Kovič received his diploma in world literature and literary theory at the University of Ljubljana in 1956 . From 1956 to 1957 he worked as a journalist, from 1958 to 1992 as a lecturer for beautiful literature and editor-in-chief at the Državna založba Slovenije publishing house in Ljubljana. Kovič had study stays in Paris (1961/62) and Prague (1966) and took part in many international writers' meetings. a .: Poetry International , Rotterdam 1996; Around the Castle , Vienna 1999; Encontro international de poetas , Coimbra 2001; Central Europe Biennial , Schiltigheim-Strasbourg 2001; Il cammino delle comete , Pistoia, 2004. He was a member of the Slovenian PEN and since 1991 a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts . He received numerous prizes, including a. 1978 the Prešeren Prize , the highest literary prize in Slovenia, 2002 the Central European Time Price (CET) in Budapest.

He translated Heinrich Heine , Rainer Maria Rilke , Stefan George and Georg Heym .
