Cajetan Weiller , from 1807 von Weiller , (born August 2, 1761 in Munich ; † June 24, 1826 there ) was a German Catholic clergyman and educator .

Life

Cajetan Weiller was the son of a craftsman. Until 1778 he attended the former Jesuit high school (today's Wilhelmsgymnasium ) in Munich. He then entered the Benediktbeuern monastery as a novice , but soon left it and studied theology at the University of Munich . On May 21, 1785 he was ordained a priest in Freising. Then he worked as a teacher in Munich. In 1799 he became professor for practical philosophy and education and its rector at the Lyceum assigned to the Wilhelmsgymnasium . From 1809 to 1823 he was director of the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium. From 1806 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences ; since October 22, 1823, as successor to Friedrich von Schlichtegroll, General Secretary and from 1807 bearer of the personal nobility title.

He was a distinguished school reformer, collaborator on the "curriculum for all Kurpfalzbaierischen secondary schools" drawn up by Joseph Wismayr in 1804 and in the dispute between the old Bavarian "realists", who advocated an emphasis on "realities" in school lessons, and the neo-humanist- oriented "idealists" an opponent in particular from their representative Friedrich Thiersch .
