description

Vegetative characteristics

Kalanchoe crenata is a perennial , downy-haired shrub that reaches a height of 30 to 200 centimeters. The one to several, round, upright, fleshy shoots are glabrous or balding towards the base. In the upper part they are about glandular-downy-haired. The fleshy, horizontal or downwardly curved leaves are stalked and glabrous. The upper leaves are somewhat sparsely glandular and downy-haired. The 1 to 4 centimeter long, somewhat stem-encompassing petiole is flattened and furrowed on the top. The egg-shaped or obovate to spatulate, concave, yellowish green to deep green leaf blade is 3 to 30 centimeters long and 2 to 20 centimeters wide. Their tip is blunt, the base wedge-shaped and sloping down. The leaf margin is crenate, irregularly crenulated to occasionally lobed.

Generative characteristics

The large, multi-flowered inflorescence is a panicle cyme and reaches a length of 25 to 40 centimeters. The upright, glabrous or glandular-downy-haired flowers are on 2 to 9 millimeter long peduncles . Your calyx tube is 0.1 to 1.5 millimeters long. The lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, narrowed, pointed, green calyx tips are occasionally finely striped with red. They are 2 to 8 millimeters long and 3 to 4 millimeters wide. The petals are red, reddish orange, yellow, in the lower part pale or greenish yellow and white. The elongated ampoule-like corolla tube is paper and 8 to 17 millimeters long. Their elongated, lanceolate to elliptical, pointed corolla lobes have an attached tip. They are 3 to 8 millimeters long and 1.5 to millimeters wide. The stamens are attached to the tip of the corolla tube and do not protrude from the flower. The elongated anthers are 0.5 to 1 millimeter long. The linear to narrowly elongated nectar flakes with rounded tips are 1.5 to 4.5 millimeters long. The linear-lanceolate carpel has a length of 5 to 10 millimeters. The stylus is 1 to 4.5 millimeters long.

The seeds reach a length of about 1 millimeter.

Systematics and distribution

Kalanchoe crenata is widespread in tropical Africa from the Central African Republic to South Africa and in Arabia . The species is feral in tropical America, India , Malaysia and Australia .

The first description as Vereia crenata by Henry Charles Andrews was published in 1798. Adrian Hardy Haworth placed the species in the genus Kalanchoe in 1812 .
