Kaleidoscope EP is the thirteenth EP of the British pop-rock - band Coldplay . It was released digitally on July 14, 2017.

background

On November 21, 2016, Chris Martin reported on the official Twitter account that the band was working on new songs.

The EP was originally supposed to be released on June 2nd, but that was delayed until June 30th, which the band announced beforehand. There was then another delay until July 14th. It was the group's 13th EP.

In terms of content, it was based on the last studio album A Head Full of Dreams . There was an Interlude Kaleidoscope called. Two features are represented on the EP: Something Just Lke This , which was created together with The Chainsmokers and is included on the EP as a live version, and Miracles (Someone Special) with Big Sean . Aliens, on the other hand, marked a collaboration with Brian Eno , who produced the song.

Track list

  1. All I Can Think About Is You (Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, Chris Martin) - 4:34
  2. Miracles (Someone Special) (with Big Sean ) (Berryman, Buckland, Champion, Martin, Sean Anderson) - 4:36
  3. Aliens (Berryman, Buckland, Champion, Martin, Brian Eno ) - 4:42
  4. Something Just Like This (with The Chainsmokers ) (Andrew Taggart, Berryman, Buckland, Champion, Martin) - 4:54
  5. Hypnotized (Berryman, Buckland, Champion, Martin) - 6:31

Music genre

Stylistically, the EP moves in different ways with all five songs. So of course the live version of Something Just Like This is an EDM track like the original , while All I Can Think About Is You is somewhere between Shoegaze and Radiohead . Miracles (Someone Special), on the other hand, can be assigned to pop music and contains rap passages by Big Sean, while the collaboration with Brian Eno is reminiscent of older songs and remains the only explicitly political statement of the EP.

Reception and awards

The EP was nominated for Best Singing Album - Pop at the 2018 Grammy Awards, while the single Something Just Like This was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo / Group .

Sven Kabelitz from Laut.de wasn't very convinced of the EP. He saw the EP as the sad climax of a steady downward spiral, a "level limbo", the once hopeful band Coldplay, which has been setting a new record for years. In the end, the EP leaves you "truly overwhelmed."

Alina saw it more positively on minute music, which came to the conclusion: “ (...) Kaleidoscope will probably be a nice addition to the last studio album for all Coldplay fans and casual listeners, which is after all two years old. Maybe Coldplay will sweeten the waiting time for the next album for one or the other. "

In the New Musical Express , Mark Beaumont hoped that Coldplay would have abandoned their Avicii phase with Kaleidoscope and would now try again to pick up on their 2000 beginnings. The music express saw it the same way.

Even the Rolling Stone rated the EP rather positive, the only drawback would be the live song with The Chainsmokers.

Jan Ulrich Wenke wrote in the Stuttgarter Zeitung : "As expected, everything is produced squeaky clean, everything of course of the corresponding basic quality - and yet you just can't put aside the thought that there was no compelling artistic necessity for this mini album release by Coldplay."
