The Kalixälven (also Kalix älv ) is a north Swedish river that flows from the Scandinavian Mountains into the Gulf of Bothnia .
The main source of the Kalixälven is the Visttasjohka . This rises north of the Kebnekajse massif not far from the Alesjaure and flows in a south-easterly direction to Paittasjärvi . This belongs to a lake system which is drained by the Kalixälven. The Kalixälven has a total length of 450 kilometers. Its catchment area covers approximately 18,000 km². In the upper reaches there are several larger lakes (such as Paittasjärvi, Kaalasjärvi and Kaitumjaure ) and waterfalls (such as Linafallet and Jockfallet ). The Kalixälven flows into the Gulf of Bothnia at Kalix . The mean water flow (MQ) is 290 m³ / s.
The Kalixälven is Sweden's longest natural river. Important tributaries coming from the right are Kaitumälven and Ängesån . From the left the Tärendö älv , which arises at a river bifurcation of the Torneälven , flows into the Kalixälven.
