history

The place Kalzenau (Latin: Calcenoide , Latvian: Veckalsnava ) was mentioned in writing as early as the 14th century and lies north of today's town.

Alt-Kalzenau was a fiefdom of the Tiesenhausen family . A Johann von Tiesenhausen is mentioned as the owner as early as 1455 . In 1586 Heinrich von Tiesenhausen owned Kalzenau and Berson. Since this branch of the family did not want to submit to the Swedes, the estate was confiscated by the Swedish king. In 1625 King Gustav Adolf gave the estate to his general Johann Reinhold Streiff von Lauenstein , as well as the estates of Fehteln, Odensee, Sausen and Jummerdehn. His son, the Swedish lieutenant colonel Johann Heinrich Streiff von Lauenstein (1647–1700), became the Livonian state marshal in 1690. His heir Anna Katharina (1683–1710) married Johann Albrecht von Mengden .

The Russian Tsarina Anna had the estate confiscated and gave it to Field Marshal Peter von Lacy in 1737 . He sold it to Johann Christoph von Ceumern . From this the estate was sold in 1760 to his son-in-law Christoph Reinhold von Rennenkampff for 45,000 thalers.

Neu-Kalzenau was sold to Heinrich Joseph von Kahlen in 1794 by Hofrat Paul Reinhold von Rennenkampff for 27,000 thalers . From 1794 to 1920 Neu-Kalzenau was owned by the von Kahlen family. When in 1903 a train station was set up on the narrow-gauge railway line Pļaviņas - Gulbene , Jaunkalsnava developed into the capital of the rural community.

The painter Theodor Doebner (1875–1942) and the shipbuilding engineer Georg Weinblum (1897–1974) were born here. From 1908 to 1917 Andrievs Niedra was pastor in Kalsnava on the local parish.
