Kalvarienbergkapelle in Wörnitzstein

The Kalvarienbergkapelle in Wörnitzstein , a district of Donauwörth in the district of Donau-Ries ( Bavaria ), was built in 1750. The building on a high, wooded ridge above the left bank of the Wörnitz is a protected architectural monument .

description

The chapel was built by Johann Georg Hitzelberger in 1750 on behalf of Abbot Cölestin I. Meermoos, who ran the Kaisheim Monastery from 1739 to 1771 . The stone tablet to the left of the entrance ( CAZK 1750 ) reminds of the client and the year of construction. The building on a cranked oval and curved floor plan is structured inside and outside by pilasters .

The church interior is illuminated through three-pass-shaped windows. On the roof sits a high ridge turret with an octagon and an onion hood . The rocailles inside was created by Paul Anton Landes in 1751 . The ceiling fresco , labeled with the same year, comes from Gottfried Bernhard Göz and illustrates the founding of the church on a rock with the handover of the keys to Peter. Below is the victory of the church represented by a royal woman; she holds the model of the chapel in her hand, the miter and abbot's staff point to Kaisheim. The unbeliever plunging into the depths below symbolizes that hell cannot harm the church. The altar, from the middle of the 18th century, with a crucifixion group comes from the circle of Johann Georg Bschorer .

Way of the Cross

The ascent to the chapel leads through a portal donated by Therese Kapfer in 1910 and is lined with painted station pictures of the Passion of Christ on brick pillars.
