Kamień [ ˈkamʲɛɲ ] (German stone ) is a district of the city of Rybnik in the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland with around 3,700 inhabitants .

history

The origin of the place name Stein is connected to the traditional handicraft of the stonemason , which used to be practiced in this place on the basis of the sandstone deposits . This is also indicated by Stein's coat of arms, which shows a stonemason holding a hammer in one hand and a stone in the other.

The history of Stein probably goes back to the 13th century . It was a manor until 1788 , although little is known about the owners of that time. The takeover by knight Mikulczyn is recorded for the year 1437. In the 19th century, Stein belonged to two large landowners: Eigert and Spendel. The Austrian Morgenbeser took over the donor's share around 1900, and after the First World War it was again Mr. Szafron.

Nepomuk Chapel

In 1856 a train station was built in the nearby village of Eigersfeld ( Rzędówka ), which gave stone a connection to the railway network. The landowner Eigert donated the Nepomuk Chapel at the beginning of the 19th century; With the local school in 1858 and the fire station in 1910, other important buildings followed. Up to the end of the 19th century there was a glassworks in Stein that went back to Von Gurecky, and a brickworks followed in 1890 .

In 1922, the place fell after the referendum in Upper Silesia of 1921, in which the majority of Stein voted for annexation to Poland, as Kamień to the Polish East Upper Silesia . The place was able to maintain its independence for a long time, but after the Second World War it had to form a community community ( gmina zbiorcza ) with Leszczyny, Książenice and Przegędza and in 1973 Kamień became a district of Ochojec, and in 1977 it was finally part of Rybnik.

It was not until 1989 that Kamień became its own parish , after it originally belonged to the Rybnik parish and to the same after the Książenice parish was founded in 1925. In 1994 the place got a church.
